The project took several years to complete and through disease and accidental deaths took many lives but finally was accomplished. My Dad was born in 1908 so I find it interesting that this is a historical event that took place in his lifetime.
The benefit in shortening trade routes from New York to ports on the US west coast, and vice versa, was enormous, and cruise ships now also form a large part of the traffic.
