Why the Berlin Wall Fell | Dinesh D'Souza

"The tears of joy with which millions greeted the collapse of the Soviet empire proved that Reagan was entirely justified in calling it an “evil empire.” Even some of who were previously skeptical of Reagan were compelled to admit that they had been wrong and Reagan’s approach had been thoroughly vindicated. Reflecting on Reagan’s complex strategy of initial toughness toward the Soviet Union—in the face of denunciation from liberals—and later support for Gorbachev—in the face of criticism from conservatives—Henry Kissinger called it “the most stunning diplomatic achievement of the modern era.”

Margaret Thatcher composed Reagan’s epitaph when she said that “he won the cold war without firing a shot.” That’s how history will remember him. On the anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse, we should do Reagan the honor of recognizing his prescient leadership that helped to produce that marvelous event."

This explains more of how Reagan played a role in getting the wall to fall down. Great analysis.

The Soviet Union was doomed economically, it was just a matter of time, just happened to take place on Reagans shift.

Poor concrete work. After all, it was put up in a hurry. Too much sand, I would guess.

I assume that the reasons are many and intertwined. President Reagan's policies certainly helped in the breakup, as did having Gorbachev as the Soviet leader (recall that the Wall fell first, with the Soviet Union breaking up a year later).

Dinesh D'Souza is the right wing Michael Moore, and we'd all be better off without either of them.

Reading this article he seems to think that almost causing a global thermonuclear war is a good thing, and then getting scared (which makes sense, I was scared then too), backing off and letting Gorbachev do his thing somehow constitutes an 'influence'. And I love how he says that it couldn't have been economics that felled the USSR simply because that has never happened before. LOL.

Chernobyl played a much larger role in killing the USSR than Reagan did... and then there's the little matter of the fact that the USSR was a state capitalist empire that encompassed numerous countries that had complex relations with Russia, China's ending its formerly strong ties, and the huge black market brought about by an inefficient highly centralized planned economy. There was also the endless, unwinnable war in Afghanistan that the Americans have now inherited.

Reagan was one of the worst things ever to happen to the planet. If you want to blame someone for 9/11, the economic crisis, lack of jobs and wealth disparity that we are all experiencing now, he's your guy.

Blessed be his name...

And the right has the gall to accuse Obama voters of hero worship. That sentence is full on veneration. Reagan is on the fast track to straight-up deification with you guys.

Lol...thankyou for your "fair and balanced" take on the situation. I will file it right next to D'Souza's.

Thanks for addressing my points and providing so much insight into why they aren't accurate.
Oh wait, your sole contribution to the discussion is this worthless, snide remark.
