One of the most interesting stories of the war. No, it's downright weird and funny at the same time. Forgive me if it has appeared on this forum before:

The upshot? In the closing days of the war, Americans captured an Austrian castle where important politicos were held prisoner, most notably Gamelin and Reynaud. An SS panzer grenadier unit advanced on the castle with the assignment to execute all the prisoners. The Americans, the French prisoners, some Wehrmacht units and Austrian partisans fought the SS before an American column relieved the defenders.
