And incidentally, right down the road from the Appomattox National park, the Museum of the Confederacy opened a new branch of their museum. I visited there recently, and imo. the museum's a nice addition to an Appomattox trip. (peace)
Ovcatto and Grandstander did the Late Great Civil War thread for the past few years. That is quite an accomplishment. You could copy/paste each section and do your own Createspace book.
Do you guys know of any commemorations? I think it's an event worthy of commemoration, but I don't see many public events? -thanks.
In April 1865, Joe Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee to Sherman at the Bennett Place in Durham, North Carolina. 150 year anniversary events are coming up soon so if you are interested you better check it out.
I wonder if any of the re enactment groups are planning to restage either Lee's surrender meeting with Grant, or the formal surrender ceremony of the 12th where the Confederates had to give up their arms and battle flags.
I could see the former, but based on the personalities of several re enactors I have met, I have a hard time seeing any of them working up enthusiasm for the latter, recreating that humbling moment for the proud survivors of the Army of Northern Virginia. Some, I could not say what percentage, of those who do the re enactments as rebel units, struck me as unreconstructed Confederates who still favored the cause.
The civil war seems to be like the Irish and the British a battle never to end; really. From north to south no one really wants to get past it.I am kind of a first generation born in south of a family from the Northeast but even then I wish more I could look back to having earlier ancestors from Texas independence. I do not see much value in the civil war as to pride on either side.
