There was a serious Trade Imbalance between the Roman Empire and China.
During the midst of the Roman Empire, the main route went from Rome to Egypt, in Egypt there were enormous cities in the Red Sea that shipped immense volumes to India.
Cities in India stored Asian goods, silks from China were the most prized item, but the only good really prized by Chinese was Roman Glass, and silk had to be paid with Gold.
So all the gold mined in the empire ended in China, the reason why there were heavy taxes and class limitation imposed on silk.
