Adrien Arcand was a Canadian politician, not an American politician, but he looked pretty scary, too

I think his appearance pales to his political views - given that his concept of nullification was a strong influence that lead to the South breaking from the USA in the Civil War.

So true. The "I'd like to have a beer with" crowd don't seem to know a thing about anything important happening in this country (to say nothing of the rest of the world), so whoever looks best and hits all the right platitudes on the stump gets their vote.
