ahhh...you're using where they were born as criteria..I didn't know that--I was thinking more about where they ended up--and the influence they wielded.

To be sure..Lenin was not Western European.

ok..Bismarck for the Unification of Germany...

Why did you leave out George III and Louis XVI? There are probably others, but those two were fairly prominent.

Churchill in the 20th century and he was no saint. Yet the only real good thing he did was stood up to the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s.

19th century was Bismark and Queen Victoria.

I do not know much of the 18th Century.

Out of the names on the poll, Bismark.

Why is De Gaulle even on that list ?

Out of the entire 300 years, and leaving out Hitler and Napoleon... that's just too many people to chose from.

Another problem making it hard for me to choose is that the most influential country in much of that time period was the British Empire, yet there isn't a single prime-minister that stands out as the person who made it great (unlike, say, Bismark for Germany). I think this highlights the main quality that made the Empire great - it was not dependent on a person, it was based on a well working system.

In terms of the creation of the British Empire, William Pitt the Elder is probably the most influential prime minister. In terms of wielding the power of the Empire then Lord Palmerston is probably the most influential. However, your comment with regard to the 'system' is very apt.

Of those listed in the poll, it'd be Bismarck or Churchill. The others were small time players only relevant in their own countries.

Angela Merkel.
She has basically been guiding a united Europe for about 12 years now.
Unless you don't count Germany as Western Europe.
No other leader has genuinely had as much influence across the continent at Merkel has for as long as she had.

I agree that Merkel is the most predominate Western European Leader in the 21st century and rivals Western European Political leaders of the later stages of the 20th century.

I would say the most predominate Western European Leader 200 years ago was Napoleon.

As post WW2 German leaders go, Adenauer and Kohl are probably equally as meritorious as Merkel if not more so.
