Franz Reicheldt jumped from the Eiffel Tower, in 1912, while testing a parachute of his own design. It didn't work. Allegedly, he tried to back out before jumping, but was persuaded to go through with it by his manager.
Be warned - the footage is graphic, and shows him falling and 'landing.' Don't watch it if you're sensitive or squeamish.
