" Black Saturday " Baseball's Deadliest Disaster

On August 8, 1903, a crowd of 10,000 people were watching their hometown Philadelphia Phillies play the Boston Beaneaters in a doubleheader. Meanwhile, outside the ballpark, two drunken men were walking down the street being followed and teased by a group of boys and girls.
One of the drunks grabbed a little girl by the hair and accidentally fell on top of her causing her to scream. The other children began yelling " Help " and " Murder."
The commotion caused the people at the ballpark in the top bleachers to congregate on an overhanging wooden balcony to see what was going on. Over 300 people jammed onto the balcony causing it to collapse.
