Thing is that as PofW "David" enjoyed that globe trotting/society whirl lifestyle, and is widely assumed to have preferred it to becoming king. In the end having made that bed the Duke of Windsor had to lie in it; never realizing or perhaps too late that his rank and future inheritance played such a large role in all the deference and so forth.


In the end it was the more louche elements of European, American and other "society" that accepted the duke and his duchess. Americans are easily bowled over by royalty even if it is disgraced, so there you are then.
