Lake of the Woods gained countey status in 1922, split from Beltrami. In 1954 (according to my road atlas of that year), threre was no road from Manitoba into the Northwst Angle. There was a summer-only ferry steamer that ran from Warroad MN, and I presume motorists just drove across the ice bridge when the ferry froze up.
It's surrounded by Ontario on two sides and Manitoba on the west, but does not touch Ontario land anywhere, just territorial waters.

yes , It was 1954 , that Spooner- Baudette became one , and, the county seat of Lake of the Woods county. The Northwest Angle today is almost all Indian land. That was not always the case. At one point , the locals decided to join Canada, and secede from the US, but that effort failed. The US-Canadian Customs shack was highlighted on national news a year or two back. Its a strictly voluntary crossing , with a video phone , you are supposed to use when crossing. The only road in , is thru Manitoba. The city of Winnipeg draws its water from the lake. The Winnipeg River starts at the north end of the lake , and emptys into lake Winnipeg . Along the way are many Hydro dams , and expensive homes , summer and year round.

It is the most boring drive in the world. It is a straight gravel road with absolutely unvarying coniferous forest at an unvarying distance from the roadway. The only vehicles you meet are SUVs pulling boat trailers. Not perfectly staight, it just seems a lot straighter than it is.

Magpies are pretty common around Baudette. It is the easternmost extremity of the range of Magpies in North America.

Remember , you are getting closer to the Great Plains , and endless farm lands. The Canadian Shield gives way to wheat ranches, not far to the west of lake of The Woods. The drive up route 59 to Winnipeg seems endless , especially in winter , at 40 below. Southbound from Winnipeg , many years ago ,one winter , the grease froze and burnt out my front wheel bearings.

I heard that years ago in Edmonton, people would let their car run all winter, because if they shut it off for a few hours,, they could not get it started again until spring.

I'm talking about the pre-heating block era. 1930s and 40s.
Even with heating blocks, if you drive your car to work, and there is no place to plug it in, you'd have to leave it run for 8 hours.

If it doesn't get too cold, you can hang a 100-watt trouble light on your oil pan, and that will provide quite a lot ol hear overnight. Farmers in Nebraska do that.
