Default Geography

Since no one answered Trudeyrose's question about the location of the treaty that ended the Thirty Years War, it was Munster. It's been decades since I've studied European history, so, admittedly, I peeked at the answer. It was known as the Peace of Westphalia, but some called it the "Peace of Exhaustion," as it took so many lives and laid Germany in ruins. The history of that war is a horror story. Some German cities were almost decimated.

LT Dan's question about Reelfoot Lake: The very powerful earthquake of 1812, with epicenter in New Madrid, MO, created this lake. I knew about the earthquake, but I had to look up Reelfoot Lake.

It's possible that Southern Ontario is farther south than the border of Northern California, but it does look close. Another geographical oddity is that Reno, Nevada, is farther west than Southern California.

I have a question: What reknown traveler of the 14th century was born in Tangier, Morocco, and traveled much of the known world over a period of 24 years? His recorded travels of about 75,000 miles made Marco Polo's travels look like short journeys in comparison.

Thats right! The New Madrid quake was so powerful that the Mississippi River flowed backwards and filled in a crevice forming the lake! i LOVE these sort of posts!

You must be talking about Ebn Batuta (sp?). I had a friend in college named Eben who was from South Africa who told me about this intrepid traveler.

DC, you have a good memory! Ibn Battuta was quite a remarkable man, although I'm sure some of his exploits were embellished, as they often are. BTW, there are several good websites detailing his travels.
