I got a little sentimental seeing Buzz Aldrin the other night at the SOTU along with the D-Day vets and Holocaust survivors. Other incredible figures of past history like Jesse Jackson and even those from the old entertainment world from Paul McCartney to Kirk Douglas to Olivia de Havilland just marvels me that they are still alive, still relevant, and still a part of our world today. I read about some of these people in history books as a child and now as an adult, it's astounding and pleasant to the heart to see these aged figures still in relatively good health and making moves in this world. Do you have any particular idols or historical figures that you felt similarly about?
Some of those are younger than I am, so I see it from a different view. I remember the deaths of FDR and Henry Ford and Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb and Orville Wright and George V and Einstein and Rachmaninoff and Robert Frost and Picasso and D W Griffith..
Since historical figures don't usually drop dead immediately after making their impact on the world, no, it is hardly a surprise that many of them are still around. I mean, musicians and actors tend to make their mark young. And we didn't send old people to the Moon - they were all in their 30s or 40s. So, sure, many of those people are still around decades later.
I can't say I'm "fascinated" by the idea that people who were around in the 1960's are still here today. That being said, it's nice that we still have legends walking among us.

I'm interested in watching the passage of time in them. With celebrities, you have such vivid photographic/video/film evidence of their youth - something we don't have for "common folk" of that era.
I don't know if this is what the OP was getting at, but it makes time seem "flat" to me, to see people who I know in video, so real to life, suddenly grow old before my eyes.
Similarly, with Buzz Aldrin, who was so vivid, and Olivia De Haviland, who was so very youthful and dewey in Gone With the Wind. Makes time seem flat, and fleeting to see "then" and "now".
These two videos of Kris Kristopherson, the sexiest man to ever walk the planet earth, in his vigorous youth, and then currently, an old geezer. How different the context, seeing the young man singing about a current love, and an old man wistful for a long, long ago passion, and having to be helped along in case he faltered.

What a difference....in us all as we age. When you get to your 60s you know that most of your life has passed and not so much is ahead. Not to be maudlin, just it's true...and you look back and see how fleeting it is...

Kris is only 82. Something has gone wrong.
But Chuck Yeager!.... He didn't need much help getting into the back seat of an F-15 at age 89, but, Hey!, it's difficult when you have balls as big as his! Check it out!
I'm working on a project that involves interviews with intelligence figures who were on the inside during 9/11 and Operation Desert Storm. All of it is declassified, but fascinating stuff nevertheless.
