From a sociological point of view, the impact in the 17th and 18th century must have been astonishing. A Western ship must have been the craziest aggregation of wealth and power - even the lowliest sailor would have access to resources far beyond those available to the locals. Imagine a hundred young male billionaires descending on a modest town, with the intent of having a good time. No wonder the local men would resent them and ally themselves mostly for convenience.

It wasn't unknown for a ships' crew to be overcome only to have the ship burned in order to harvest the iron fittings.
