What was the most positive thing to come out of World War 2? I say computers.

The numbers are even more stark when you consider how much smaller the world population was before the war than compared to today.

As Chinese and Soviets archives are being opened up, the death tolls are rising.

US tank production numbers appear to be pretty far off (low).

I guess Russia fought on one front at a time, but the Eastern Front was a giant meat grinder.

Russia was also in the 1939 Soviet Japanese Border War, she provided substantial military aid to China 1937-39, invaded Poland in 1939, started the Winter War, and again fought the Japanese in Manchuria in 1945.

I am not sure what the last bullet point is supposed to mean. Greece, Crete, the Channel Islands and North Africa were not an extension of Germany's borders.

  • The USSR only fought on one front;
  • Apart from U-Boat attacks, Germany only expanded on its own borders;
Some clarifications:
  • The USSR only fought on one front - Well, technically correct maybe. They had their western front but also they had a northern front with Finland, also before war with Germany Russia had skirmishes with Japan before the Soviet-Japan nuetrality pact (primarily in the late 30s), and of course after near the end of the war with japan.
  • Britain lost 450,000 military & civilian - I beleive this includes it's crown colonies, which in turn makes this figure somewhat misleading as it's not from the home island.
  • The Japanese & Germans never produced 4-engined bombers - The Germans had a 4 engine bomber in prototype form - Messerschmitt Me 264. However, indeed, it never entered mass production.

Production numbers I also question. Per wiki German munitions production exceeded UK in all except a few years of the war.

Also not sure what this means: "Apart from U-Boat attacks, Germany only expanded on its own borders""

Not sure what this means either: "By May 1941 all countries around Germany & seized German territory were not anti German". Occupied Europe would tend to differ, particularly the jewish population.

Finland, not Norway.

Putting aside any disputes on the numbers WWII was a global catastrophe. And if there is a WWIII with all the new weapons technologies available to the world's armies we wont be sitting around coffee in hand on CD chit chatting about military history.

Germany developed the V1 and V2 rocket weapons which ushered in a new approach to warfare. German rocket scientists were an important "war prize" for the allies.

- 60-65 million dead is considered conservative. The more new sources that are studied the larger the number of dead are. When I went so school we learnt that 50 million people died, now some figures suggest 75-80 million.

- Yes, but actually no. This requires that the Stug-series, Hetzers, Jagdpanzers and other tank destroyers and assault guns are not classified as tanks, though they were used and intended to be used as tanks. This was a considerable number too, 16,000, and the shift to turretless armored vehicles was a deliberate policy.

- The He 177 was in practical terms a 4-engine bomber, as it had 2-welded together engines x2 but with two propellers. If that isn't accepted, the 4-engine Fw 200 sank hundreds of thousands of tons of Allied shipping, and cannot be considered anything else than a bomber.
