I know that a big problem the German N-Word mini-submarine had was that it failed to release its torpedo and hence carried the entire sub to the target at 30 knots or whatever. However, is this the only reason 80% of the operators of this sub were killed? BTW, was there a James Caan film where he and a group of commandos had to destroy these types of subs?
Neger is Negro in many European languages. That other word is spelt the same way over there as it is in English (2 Gs). I saw it in Berlin as graffiti during my 2010 visit as in 'N word, go back to Africa!'

I don't know - but it looks like you read Wikipedia's page on the Neger.
Anyway, 80% wouldn't be all that high. German u-boats as a whole saw a 75% fatality rate among crews during World War II. Even on U.S. submarines it was nearly 20%. IIRC, it was around 90% on submarines of the IJN.
It would not have been so tough to design the torpedo firing mechanism such that the torpedo had to release before the engine would start. Or set up some sort of "ripcord" type manual release.

Germany seems to have generally had a torpedo curse, as this failure to release problem seems to be unrelated to the impact pistols prematurely detonating or the depth setting not functioning correctly in the type II torpedoes. I can't imagine anything much more frustrating than being a U-boat commander with a perfect torpedo solution, only to miss the target due to a faulty torpedo.
IIRC, the allies had broken codes and understood enough about the U-boats early on that they could destroy many easily. The propaganda machine of Germany and the secrecy of what the allied commanders really knew was going on may have led to some creative stories, much like "carrots improve night vision" was as a cover for radar in the planes.
