Was the heliocentric earth thrust upon us only after NASA? Didn't it used to be THE debate?
In the 17th century, yes it was The debate between scientists such as Galileo and the Roman Catholic Church. By 1822, however, the Pope was allowing heliocentric books to be published in Rome predating NASA by almost 250 years.
A big lie, I'm sure nowhere near the biggest, is that Columbus believed the earth was flat. Until recently I admit it was all I had ever heard. Fortunately I've now seen several documentaries and articles with evidence that was not a belief amongst educated people during the Middle Ages. It would seem most of what we were taught about knowledge being lost during that time is true only for the uneducated classes. Which I would think true of any era.
Unfortunately, the victor usually writes the history so it is hard to know what true history is. Even today we see people trying to sanitize history so as not to offend anyone. Not only is it disheartening at the thought of lost knowledge but also lost understanding which would hopefully keep us from repeating atrocities.
would be that the earth is flat and that god is real?
Yeah, I'll go with god is real. That whopper has created more misery than any other lie in history, and billions of people still believe it.
The earth is flat thing was invented by 19th century school teachers. The ancient Phoenicians knew it was a sphere, and Eratosthenes did a good job of measuring the circumference in 240 BC.
History.
History as we know it is a biggest lie.
It is nothing but a continuous exercise in re-writing and adjusting to current geopolitical needs. As one who owns history dictates future.
