Chuck Yeager the man and pilot who first broke the sound barrier in flight has died today at age 97. The date is December 7th, 2020. He was a all American hero and will be missed. His accomplishments paved the way for aviation to advance post WW2 era into the modern day.
The man with "The Right Stuff." Until Tom Wolfe's book and the subsequent movie gave him the fame that he deserved, Chuck Yeager was known mostly to aviation buffs:
Chuck Yeager was born about 35 miles from my house. He's a big hero around here. The airport is named for him. He was there for the renaming ceremony and made the first takeoff and the first landing when his name officially went on the airport. He flew an airplane under a bridge in Charleston once. Old people still remember it.
There is a scholarship program with his name on it at Marshall University in Huntington. He's been there several times to meet the Yeager Scholars and the program managers. Everybody really liked him.
