Still, even if the Bolshevik Revolution hadn't happened, and other democratic reformers had taken over, they'd have had to do the similar, to get the nation onto a solid footing after the war.

looks like they were mostly cold calculating criminals and terrorists with a grand plan, just some were idealist who ended up in GULAG. Lenin and co were well paid by Germans to undermine tsar's efforts against Germany.
