My family "Americanized" their Italian surname back then in NYC. Grandma even changed her given name from Anna Maria to Anne. Yes, they stopped speaking Italian in public as well.

FDR knew he could not win reelection in NY without the support of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. It's why he stopped persecuting Italians.

La Guardia was also half Jewish.
