No, Colter was the guy who discovered the Yellowstone geysers.
How can the guy who discovered them and the first guy who saw them be different people? Partner of Andrew Henry? I'm starting to run out of people born in 1775. William Ashley? Manuel Lisa?
It is the same person but he is just a clue to help you find me. He was the one my partner and I talked into leaving the expedition. Note that he is referenced in third person, not in first so I am not he. I did not discover the geysers, he did.
Keep researching. We weren't part of the expedition but followed them partway up the MO as they left and greeted them upon their return. Lewis did mention us in his journal.

I don't have time to read Lewis' journal and look up the bio of everybody he mentioned. If this guy is not named in Wikipedia or ordinary googled accounts of the expedition, I'm not going to find him.
I don't know the groundrules here. At what point do we consider the audience stumped? I just thought it would be more interesting to have to dig a little beyond an easy wikipedia lookup but will end it if this one's too arcane. Also thought there'd be some real Lewis and Clark buffs out there. We can leave it open for now and someone else can throw one out there. I have to go away for a few hours.

Not on Sundays, when the library is closed.
I'm not one of the original founders of this, but I presume the ground rules are pretty loose. Must be historical, and presumably significant enough that either the name or a matching achievement would be notable.
I guess on this one, my argument would be that it is fair enough to use Colter, who would have been a legitimate figure, but a bit arcane to find the single reference work that stated which of his many associates was standing next to him on a certain day of his life. After all, we're all amateurs (or wannabes) here, with a NFL double header coming up pretty soon.
