You're right, it was Allen Pinkerton. I see by the time stamps that that post was apparently coming in just as I was writing #2207. Sorry about that. Zee909 is the winner.
Always a pioneer in my chosen field, I was born in a log cabin to Quaker parents. After college graduation, I served as assistant director of the Institute of International Education. I came to fame during war time in a different capacity, continuing in this new career field for over 20 years, continually breaking new ground. I went back to government service late in my career. After my death, a well known educational institution named their Center of Public Diplomacy for me.
I was born in a small Appalachian town, and rose to the rank of captain in the US armed forces. While in service, I was involved in a highly controversial international incident, which involved a prisoner exchange. I was finally exonerated, but was heavily criticized at the time for the way I handled myself. Later, a major music group would, coincidentally, be known by the same name as that controversy. After my military career, I turned to the media and became a photo-journalist, and was killed in an accident while doing that job, at the age of 47, and buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
I am credited with giving the best glimpse into life during the Restoration period although I never intended to. Of particular interest were first-hand accounts of a fire that came closer to destroying a city and kingdom than is widely recognized and an account of the coronation of a king. During my life I served at the highest levels of government and spent time imprisoned following accusations of treason. After my retirement, I wrote my memoirs, however, I am best remembered for writings that I intended be kept private.
Who am I?
