This is rather convoluted. Can I assume that you, during your career, used at least two different first names and at least two different last names?

My first name was the same my whole career, I although I used a shortened version early on. It was my last name that I changed...

Hint: The surname that I adopted and that I'm known by today was from someone who is probably best known for an event that happened in Texas..

You've got it!

David Jones, originally known in his career as Davy Jones(like the member of the Monkees) took the monikor of David Bowie after the knife named after Jim Bowie.

Okay, my cousin was a well known outlaw, yet worldwide, I became much more famous. I told the story of the fall and rise of a familiar civilization. The man who killed me served 11 months for my death.

Not Edward Gibbon. I should add that the fall and rise, while historically accurate, is told through fictional characters.
