Further hint: The man who succeeded me and was responsible for my removal from power was a Catholic who was later assassinated in a suspicious military coup.

Although born in the USA, my family left when I was three, and I never returned. I rose through the ranks of the British colonial service, and once had to brutally quell a native uprising against my flagrant profiteering, which forced London to remove me from my post. I was contacted by an American who was a notorious figure in one of the most outrageous miscarriages of justice in US history, who asked me for a gift to a college from my ill-gotten gains. That college, now a university, bears my name.

Hint: This university is among those attended by a President of the United States.

Must've been multiple presidents: Elihu Yale. Interesting read about the Cotton Mather connection. One of my favorite cartoonists, Gary Trudeau, is an alumnus as well.

Born in the second half of the 19th century, I was a part time stage actor and bar owner, but I made my real bread and butter in sport. I was pretty reliable at what I was good at and was the first American athlete to earn a million dollars in the course of a career.

Given that it is the only clue, it needs to be made clear whether "career" means earning as an athlete, or earnings overall.

In just the athletic career of this individual. Massachusetts-born individual, I might add.
