I am credited with inventing the first of this type of equipment in the 2nd century BC. It is used by groups from all over the world. While these groups differ all over, their end goal is the same.

Who am I?

Polybios, inventor of the semaphore method of transmitting information?

Since it is not 'equipment', ,I assum you are not Liu An, inventor of Tofu.

Both those answers are "correct", absent any detail in your question that is not met.

Which is another way of saying that more specific information is needed if you wish to narrow it down to just one person.

I was born and grew up in the northern plains, the son of a railroad man, and turned to art very early in my life. By my early-teens, I was working with major artists. I was commissioned to do a number of famous people, but two of my other works, on the same theme, are perhaps the most well-known and familiar images in America relating to that subject using that medium.

Additional hint: Of my two really famous works, a representation of one of them is currently being pitched in TV ads, in which my name is mentioned in association with the design.
