By my research the OP is using a little of both Young and Smith in their question.

I was a military man, who progressed slowly through the ranks because my military philosophy bucked the conventional wisdom, however I was later proved insightful and was hailed as a hero. I finally became the oldest man ever to head my country's government. I was a notorious womanizer, and I remained a bachelor until my 60s, when I married a woman with a surname that would one day be bleeped by nanny software. I was sentenced to death, but it was commuted and I died in prison. An American peak is named for me, on the Continental Divide.

I was born in Ireland, although at age 17 I immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, where I found work as a newspaper editor. While I was active in both the US and Ireland, it was in a third country that I made my most lasting mark as a politician. A political group that I had previously supported, launched an ill-fated and little known attempt at an invasion of this country. I would later play a role in the creation of this country as an unified state. I was killed by a sympathizer of the afformentioned political group---making me the only major political figure of this state to have ever been assassinated.

I'm getting a sense of deja-vu here, like this same person was asked once before. Is the country in question Brazil?

No, the country in question was not Brazil. I could give more clues to the country in question, however it might become a bit too obvious.
