I was a former slave, who worked as a general roustabout, and became well known in western states as a rodeo performer. I had been taught to read by some of my sidekicks. I developed an interest in a number of fields, which resulted in a remarkable discovery. I had learned enough to recognize the importance of what I found, which resulted in centuries of scientific presumption being revisited. The place where I made my discovery is now a National Historic Site.
I could best be described as a victim of the Vietnam War. As the son of a soldier I was sent to war upon graduating from college in 1967, hopefully to follow in his famous footsteps. I was severely wounded though and nearly died after tripping a mine in 1968. A wheelchair would be an accompaniment for the rest of my life. I did marry and became the father of two children, but in spite of the successes I had during my life, depression and alcoholism would haunt me for the rest of my days. I wrote a book about my experiences that won a Pulitzer Prize.
