HARTFORD, Conn., June 18 (UPI) -- Auctioneers at Christie's were pleasantly surprised this week when they sold an old New England phone book for six figures.

The slender booklet that was the first phone directory in New Haven, Conn., went for $170,500 after some spirited bidding by six buyers Tuesday.

I would gladly pay someone $17.50 if they could stop the onslaught of phone books that are left on our front door step. They usually go directly to the recycle bin.

Isn't that the truth? Yellow Book, Black Book, Big Book.

I sometimes get the feeling that the marketing whizbangs who convince geezers to list their tree stump-removal service in bold print in lieu of having a website are actually part of a sinister plot to deforestate the entire universe.

Then I lie down and that feeling goes away.

I hate to tell them the internet has replaced phone books. I'm not sure I'd remember how to use one.

Maybe we should hang on to one & pass it on to our grandkids. Maybe in another 100 years it'll bring a couple of million. But so will a gallon of gas.
