Chief Joseph. Despite overwhelming odds successfully avoided invaders, and, except for the winter weather, would have managed to elude those who were invading and destroying his civilization and culture.....and through it all never lost his compassion, wisdom, or his dignity.

It is easy to idolize winners....but the real character of a man comes when he is faced with defeat. How he handles that says more than anything else about him.

James Madison, for the escape hatch he left us to reform our government when in the corse of human events that it has gotten too corrupted by those serving only themselves, and those who abuse our lives and our money. Thank GOD somebody was thinking about this was back then!

Abigail Adams. He intelligent discourse with John added greatly to his understanding of issues. Though she was born at a time when women were not allowed the "front burner" she still kept herself informed and gave thoughtful consideration to all aspects of American life. To me she represents all the unsung women who did so much behind the scenes to make our country great.

There's a lot of truth in what you say. And I concur that he was a great leader.

As a Hoosier you can pick a far better Civil War commander, fellow Hoosier John Wilder whose "Lightning Brigade" of Indiana and Illinois men was one of the most dangerous units of the war.

Where Wilder fought at Chickamauga.
Note the Captain Lilly mentioned on the left marker, he's the fella that started the drug company.
