You got to also thank Guns N Roses for also putting an end to the hair bands.

You have no idea how glad I am to read this post. I will be 36 in March, and I thought I was the only person of my age group who thought Nirvana was as overrated as you could get. I truly never understood why they held the prestige they did.
I could not agree more that they were a huge influence on some of the "my life sucks" music success of the late 90s-early 2000s (see Third Eye Blind, Staind, etc.).

I'd say the 1980s era ended around 1991 or so.

Politically, the Clinton election and inauguration (Nov 3, 1992 - Jan 20, 1993) is a good boundary point. The breakup of the Soviet Union is equally valid.

Economically, I'd say the 1980s ended at the end of the 1990-1991 recession (mid 1991).

Musically, 1991/1992 saw the rise of '90s music. By 1993, most music sounded much different than 1990 or so.

Fashion has nothing to do with it. Clothing doesn't define an era.

I was born Dec. 25, 1992 and feel as if I was born "almost in the '80s", but still the early '90s era.

Culturally, I will say sometime in the autumn of 1991. For any basic influences, I will say the decade ended in 1993.

Yes!!

I know we're getting a little off the subject here, but I too grew-up a serious Classic Rock junkie, but just totally did not "get" the whole Seattle Grunge thing in the 90s. Maybe you needed to be a drugged-out 19 y.o. kid on the Seattle streets to get it.

Oh, I guess some of Pearl Jam's or Alice in Chains' stuff was OK, but I was always baffled by the popularity of Nirvana. The audio mix on their CDs was awful: way too muddy; Cobain was about as good a vocalist as drunken Jim Morrison, but wthout any of the passion. Maybe cuz he was in a heroin nod all the time, who knows?
I'm trying to think of a more over-rated musician and songwriter over the last 30 or so years than Cobain, but I can't. (I reckon I'd have to go back a bit further for Janis Joplin, whom I don't even consider a musician, really.)
I defy anyone to tell me the lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" without looking them up.

So bad that Weird AL did a parody of it!

Emo has been "dead" for about 2 or 3 years now, maybe longer.

Like it, very well thought out.

Not sure if I agree that the 50s started in 1946....possibly ...after the war
start of the Baby boomer generation, so maybe.
