You would think his importance as an inventor, scientist and statesman who eventually convinced the French to fight the Brits with us would get more respect. Many people know nothing more than the fact he's on the C-Note.

I agree. However, in this day and age, Joe Simpleton is more interested in his sports teams and other frivolous nonsense, as the national IQ gradually drops, rather than his national kinsmen and the remarkable intellectual achievements of any one man, especially some "old White dude who owned slaves" as the lemmings are taught to regard our forefathers in today's pacified society of a post-American America.

One fact about him that I mentioned before, and I assume everyone knows..or not, is that he wanted the National Bird to be the Wild Turkey

Its a shame because he was a very jolly guy who loved his booze and mistresses yet was also an incredible intellect.

I agree and I feel the same way about Alexander Hamilton. Every time I hear a suggestion to replace his picture with Ronald Reagan, I want to scream!

The latest fact I learned about Franklin (just last night, in fact) is that he was a proponent of solitary confinement. I was unaware that he was interested in prison reform due to the way prisoners were treated at the time and that solitary confinement, based on Quaker teachings, was considered cutting edge technology in treating prisoners humanely.

I am long overdue to get a good autobiograhpy of him. Any suggestions?

Truly a man that is difficult to put in any category. I am hard pressed to think of many famous people that would be comparable....suggestions?

I have the A&E biography and it is awesome. The one by A&E is only 50 minutes long, but thats a good thing cause I've showed to people who don't care about history and by the end of it they say "Wow, thats was really interesting"

PBS has one that is 3.5 hours long as well

Leonardo da Vinci comes to mind.

I once went to the main branch of the NY Public Library and looked up what they had by Ben Franklin. The amount of writings was staggering.

I would humbly add Albert Schweitzer to the list; theologian, musician, physician, philosopher.

Perhaps because David McCullough hasn't written a book about him? Seriously, Thanks for peaking my interest. Got to get me over to the library.
