Obama, who is half descended from the African continent, is the first non White leader of a Western country in modern history

There were several non Italian Roman Emporers.

I'm hoping for the best. Ideally he will be remembered for his policies and not his race, although you can't deny the significance of his election.

Well, so far, his place in history consists of the distinction of being the first of his race to get elected. Maybe we should wait until he is actually in office before fixing his final legacy in our minds.

I was obviously saying I hope that he has good policies was in no way endorsing policies that he has yet to make. His place in history is not yet known, but hopefully he will be judged on how he leads, good or bad, and not his race.

It depends on what you mean by "leader". Don't forget Martin Luther King, Jr, Frederick Douglas, Ida B. Wells, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Jackie Robinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, Colin Powell, Harriet Tubman... Obama isn't the first leader, and he surely won't be the last!

The first? Wasn't there a recent Bolivian president who was of Native American descent?

Bosnia isn't a major power.

I'm only talking about Ancient Greece, Rome, Ottomans, France, Britain, etc - ei the most powerful job in the world

OK--but your original posting did not specify "major power." And I mentioned Bolivia. Bosnia, as any half decent atlas will illustrate, isn't located on this continent.

While I agree that it is a bit early to discuss the legacy of the yet to occur Obama presidency, I think the american people & the USA is entitled to a victory lap for being the first western power to elect a black head of state. For all the Mutli-cultural blatherings of Europe's talking heads, we have'nt seen an French-Arab, German-Turk, or English-Indian PM or Pres.

I didn't vote for Obama, but he won and I hope he is a good President for all of our sakes.

I think that he made too many promises to the far left and won't be able to deliver. They will turn on him within a year and will go after him even worse than they did Bush, because they will view him as a traitor.

I wouldn't want his job for the World.
