I know the native Americans were her first but as far as this thread goes. Who do you consider to be the first to discover the "new land" The Vikings or Columbus?
I think that Columbus was the one who discovered The continent of America.
Well first of all, America is not a continent. The U.S. is a portion of the North American continent. This continent includes all of Canada, the U.S., Mexico and Central America.
Secondly, Columbus's four voyages never made landfall on what is now America. He made landfall in lots of places in North America, the Caribbean and South America but not on the East Coast, Florida, Plymouth Rock or anything of the sort.
He died not fully understanding where he was. Remember, he was looking for the Spice Islands.

Good question; but why stop there? Who discovered Europe? or Asia? or Africa? And when they..(whoever they were), DID discover these places, who did they tell? And if native Americans (and ONLY native Americans) are REALLY natives of America, it seems pretty obvious that THEY probably discovered it...right?
I would imagine ALL this information is highly debatable, subjective, and depends a great deal on 'who's asking', and who's giving the answers. Europeans "discovered" corn, potatoes, tomatoes, turkeys, and tobacco when they arrived in the New World. How did they make these discoveries? Didn't somebody..(someone who already KNEW about them), point them out? If so, maybe THAT person discovered them.
Makes sense to me.
