They also invaded through southern vichy france via the med at about the same time. I guess the counter plan would be to shift forces into making that the main point of advance.
"Our landings have failed and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available. The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone."
General Dwight D. Eisenhower scribbled these chilling words on a piece of paper shortly before D-Day, June 6, 1944.

There really was no backup plan according to Bradley's book. They were in fact every afraid that russia would sign a armatice with germany when they had to dealy the invasion by one year. The russian evry much needed to have germany not be able to shift divisions from the western to eastern front.

Exactly right. Apparently Ike felt that the Allies were setting out to assault the European continent grossly underprepared, but something had to be done to prevent Stalin's Russia from controlling everything from Moscow to the English Channel.
Heck no. Italy was a nightmare. Between the terrain and General Mark Clark, we might have reach the Po Valley by, say, 1973.
I think the South of France or the Bay of Biscay would have been the logical points to land had Overlord failed.
Of course, even if Omaha had been a total disaster, there were four other beaches where bridgeheads had been established. It is likely that Americans would have poured in on Utah. Given the utter air superiority, it is unlikely that the Germans could have throw the invasion back into the sea anyway.

Yeah but they did land on the south of France shortly after Dday as my previous post stated. But that was the long road into Germany and was intended as a pincer move strategy to back up Dday.
Italy - a nightmare. We still had troops fighting up the boot hundreds of miles from the German border in May 1945 when Germany surrendered.
Really the limiting factor to crossing the English Channel was weather. That and the availability of landing crafts. That June 6th was really the only time where the combination of weather conditions made a landing feasable. If it wasn't then, then it would probably be not until May or June 1945 when another attempt can be made. So someone probably got it right when they said Western Europe would be overrun by the Soviets....or it would have given Germany time to develop some of it's advanced weapons.
