Could be the start of the Iran hostage crisis. I'll never forget (and I'll really never forgive).
Tangent: if the Iranians understood my generation better, they would never provoke the US in any way. They naively assume that we don't really want to hurt them, that we could not possibly be so truly mean (for all the 'death to America' chants) as to think it would be pleasant and satisfying to blast them. What they don't realize is that for a certain generation (one which is coming into power now), like it or not, when they think of Iran all they see is blindfolded people and an insult that was never avenged, and a country whose people really don't rate consideration (and whose casualties would not count as a bad deed).
It's an emotional and prejudiced stance, not a rational one, but it's what's there. A segment of the US population would be happy for the slightest excuse to use the most destructive weaponry possible against Iran. I don't think the Iranian leadership can quite wrap its heads around this concept, or perhaps they simply hope sanity will prevail. It is always a mistake to play chicken with someone who actually enjoys the collision.
I wonder what history will say about the Iran hostage crisis. For those of you too young to remember, it was a yearlong national nightmare that got pounded into your head every night on the news.
The answer to the OP was 3 mile island. But your post JKK, is 100% right on. I dont think half the TV watchers in the US realize the Iran Hostage crisis is why Ted Koppel and Nightline started. I remember the images on TV quite well, and agree thats a big reason Reagan won in a LANDSLIDE. If I recall the hostages were released about the same time Ronnie took office. I think they realized America was not going to put up with their BS any longer, and Ron would have had a lot of support to 'clean house'. With that said, I agree that there are a lot of others who remember that time, and wouldn't have a huge problem with a proper response to provocation. The last 20 years have shown how 'upfront' these regimes have been in their dealings....(same folks who deny the Holocaust)...Flat, Black, and Glowing was not uncommon talk back then.
I fear Obama will be the next Jimmy Carter, and this situation will happen again.
