Alternate history scenario: Elizabeth I dies before Mary is widowed (the first time) or is assassinated and Mary is her only living heir. Mary is now queen of England and Scotland and France! What does this mean for the history of England and Europe overall?
On a (slightly) more serious note, I reckon the country would've stayed Catholic a lot longer altho if Francis died Mary would then only be queen of Scotland & England and John Knox would've probably incited the country to open rebellion against her. And I think she would've made the same mistakes in her lovelife as well as governing. I think ultimately it would've worked out the same way, just without the wonderful Elizabethan era. I can't honestly see Mary fostering explorations to the Americas in defiance of Spain and France's territorial ambitions.
