Agreed. That was a shameful war. My wife's grandfather, also a Lancashireman, signed up to fight in it at 17. Do you suppose British interest in South Africa was altruistic, or was there a scent of gold and diamonds?

The Brits where in South Africa from the early days of the late 1700's or early 1800's.

Why? profit. also, the cape was strategic point for the British, for the Indian empire and later Australia and New Zealand.

Rhodes wanted to unite the whole of Africa under British rule from Cairo in the north to Capetown in the south.

Imagine the wealth Britain could have got if that had happend!

The Vandals weren't that bad. They just got a lot of bad press in Rome, the one country in the world that had the clout to write a lot of slanted reviews.

The Americans in the Philippines at the turn of the last century would be contenders. Some estimates run as high as ten percent of the Philipino population simply mowed down because they were in the way of American "nation-building".

By Iran, you mean during the US puppet regime of the Shah, right?

The US is one of the few countries that gets involved in more than one nomination, and I haven't even mentioned the swarm over the Vietnamese jungles.

I doubt that the people of North Africa from the Straight of Gibraltar across over to Carthage didn't think that ''The vandals weren't that bad'' from 429 a.d. to 477 a.d. for 48 years as Geiseric plundered, looted, tortured and killed the citizens and catholic church of North Africa.

There's a world of difference between concentration camps and death camps.
