Carthage was a Phoenician colony. Phoenicians established themselves a major power in the Mediterranean circa 1200BC. And like those of their contemporary, they were very much of the Mediterranean look you still see today.

I believe this text can help greatly in understanding the relationship of the Moors within medieval Spain especially between the Moors that were in the Iberian peninsula for generations and their recently immigrated North African counterparts.
