On September 2,1945,in ceremonies aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay,the Japanese formally surrendered,ending World War II almost exactly six years to the day after it started.
It was on this date in 1945 that the final conflict of World War II officially ended, and here's what Winnie had to say about it:

September 4th
~1666 - The most destruction to the city occured from the Great Fire of London.
~1781 - The city of Los Angeles, California is founded by a group of just over 40 Spanish settlers. It was called "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula"...no wonder we just call it LA now.
~1888 - George Eastman registered Kodak as a trademark when he receved his patent for the film camera.
~1923 - The airship USS Shenandoah took to the skies on its maiden flight.
~1941 - A German U-boat, the U-652, attacks a (then neutral) Wickes class destroyer the USS Greer. With this began America's involvement in the period of "undeclared war" on the Atlantic.
~1948 - After a reign of 58 years and 50 days, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands abdicated in favour of her daughter Juliana.
~1950 - "Beetle Bailey makes his debut in the comics.
~1957 - Ford introduced its ill-fated "Edsel".
~1972 - Mark Spitz became the first ever athlete to win 7 gold medals in a single Olympic Games.
~1998 - Two Stanford University students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, incorporate "Google".
~1661 - Louis XIV's corrupt Superintendend of Finances, Nicolas Fouquet, was arrested in Nantes by the captain of the king's musketeers, D'artagnan.
~1666 - The final day of the Great Fire of London. More than 10,500 structures were incinerated during the 4 day firestorm, including St. Paul's Cathedral. Casualties, however, are believed to have only been 16 or 17.
~1836 - The Republic of Texas elects Sam Houston as its first president,
~1887 - Exeter, England: On opening night of a romantic comedy called Romany Rye, and with an audience of over 800 present, an exposed lighting flame ignited a drapery in the Theatre Royal. 186 people died in the ensuing inferno.
~1914 - WWI: The opening day of the First Battle of the Marne which took place on the northeast outskirts of Paris. The Battle would end the German advance and the ensuing result was the stalemate of the trench warfare that lasted until 1918. It was here that the famed "taxis de la Marne" would make their mark in history.
~1927 - Walt Disney's "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" made his debut in the animated cartoon Trolley Troubles, released by Universal Pictures.
~1969 - In what would become known as the My Lai Massacre, US army Lt. William Calley is charged with six counts of premeditated murder for the deaths 109 Vietnamese civilians in the village of My Lai.
~1972 - The Munich Incident: The Palestinian terrorist group "Black September" take 11 Israeli athletes hostage in the Olympic Village at the Munich summer games. All 11 athletes would die before the ordeal was over.
~1975 - In Sacremento, California Manson family member Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme made an assassination attempt on US President Gerald Ford.
~1977 - The robotic deep space probe Voyager 1 is launched. It is still functioning near the outer reaches of the solar system today.
