Ending slavery offended lots of people. So should the people who did it have cared what they thought?

Not in my opinion. There are cases of course where one might seek to avoid offending others, but there are limits to such.

Dew, Thank you very much for your truer than true insight! It is truly appreciated.

I do enjoy the light in the children's eyes when I lift my 'skirts' and show them what's underneath. LOL And the young boys can't fathom the idea of having to wear 'dresses' till they are potty trained.

Their mothers are even more fascinated when I tell them their daughters are put in 'Stays', a type of corset, from the time their girls start walking and they would typically wear a corset straight into their grave.

This dress is my very first one, and it is a store bought dress, it fit me perfectly and was sewn within the parameters that a work dress of that period would have been. I am the one in the red dress on the left.

This is the dress I was wearing during the parade. It is about 85% hand sewn.

And like MICoastieMom said, I too can drive a car in a Hoop skirt. It's not the best picture of me, but it's how I start out getting dressed.

A chemise covers my body, drawers (pantaloons) under that, stockings and boots. A privacy skirt is next because the drawers of that period were split, then came the Corset and then over that the Caged Hoop. On top of the hoop would sit 1, 2, or 3 petticoats, this would hide the cage from plain sight.

Also, depending on your social status and financial situation, you'd only wear one or 2, but that was often a luxury most didn't have. Also, some of your undergarments might have been passed down or given to you as a cast off from a more wealthy woman in your community.

And if you were working in the field or around the farm, you wouldn't wear a hoop, but you most certainly would continue to wear your corset.

I truly enjoy teaching the young, they lap it up and still continue to come back for more.

You may have to settle for the approval of your pit bulls.
But does it not make you wonder why a descendent of an Austrian Ethnic Jew would choose to go to an event KNOWING that they might see a re-enactor dressed in a Waffen SS Uniform waiving a Swastika banner?

Bang-bang!!!
And yet you watch war movies....

What do you figure the difference is?

Both are portraying battle. One does it on camera, one in front of a live audience. Yet you have a problem with one, but not the other...

Did it ever occur to you that this might just be a clever excuse?

"'Scuse me miss? What underwear did they wear back then?"

LOL!!!

LMAO, thank you for the Laugh Dew!! It is not a watch, but a locket that holds a picture of my DH in his uniform and my Grt Grt Grt Grandfather.

I picked it up at an Antique shop and it had 2 little girls pictures from the 1900's Victorian era, and I kept both pictures.

DH did buy me an original Pocket Watch from a vendor/friend of ours for my Birthday last year, I'm freaked out about wearing it. I've actually only worn it once, and I don't think we got a picture me wearing it.

NCN8V, i personally don't see anything wrong with those outfits however maybe those who were offended thought that you were a quaker or part of a rare religious sect as some folks are offended by those sects (i know your not part of an sect) and so maybe it had nothing to do with you displaying your southern heritage is what i'm thinking.
