I have been reading that cedar and pine shavings are toxic to small animals and should not be used as bedding, because in part the shavings irritate the respiratory systems of these animals, such as rodents, guinea pigs, cats, etc.
What about cedar and pine wooden furniture? Would the same be applied to that? I know that cedar really isn't made into much furniture, but pine is used a lot. If I were to get solid or partly solid pine furniture, I'm wondering if the same toxicity of the shavings applies to that.
I have severe asthma, so I don't want to take any risks, but it seems that 75% of furniture I've seen is made of pine.
They use cedar shaving in dog beds all the time. I don't know about other animals.
I used pine shaving a lot for gerbils, etc with no ill effects.
Cedar was used (still is) for blanket chests because it helps with moths.
However, that said, you can have a reaction to any wood if you are allergic to it. I have had reactions when I worked with some exotic hardwoods, but they were mild, and I took care to wear a respirator when I was working with them.
It's more the dusts from cutting, and planings that people get ill over. Neither one bother me bit.
Lots of blanket chests are lined in cedars, if not built of all cedar, to reduce vermin that eats wool.
You can buy either wood shaving for hampsters up to horses, and I have never heard of any problems. That doesn't mean there isn't any problems.
I was born with lung and breathing issues as well, but no woods I am aware of bother me. Now that nasty weed sage gets to me bad, when it is being burned to make smoke.
I guess if I were you I would go vist another shop or 2. One that is cutting cedar and another white pine. Go in breath a little and go out side a while and wait.
Walnut chokes me. I have turned some wood that I had to wear a respirator. Teak can be dangerous but it is usually kinda oily and does not go air borne.
We were warned 30 years ago that airborne wood particles can be as dangerous as asbestos, I have taken care on job sites to minimize the dangers. I have also used ear protection but still have a lot of hearing loss.
