The problem is that you can start nearly any of them for under $100.

Be careful with buying a cheap mountain bike for mountain biking. they can be very dangerous. I would suggest hiking. A good daypack can be had for under $50, same with boots.

I think you could find a used metal detector for about $100. It's a lot of fun and is the one hobby you actually come home with more money in your pocket then when you left.

Pan for gold. Depending on your state you could have some luck finding enough to make it interesting. I did some panning here in Pa and in half an hour I found one tiny speck of gold. I'll try it again in a better area and in better weather. The water smelled bad, it was hot, buggy and posion ivy was everywhere. Not a fun time but something I always wanted to try to do.

As far as I am concerned, the absolute highest fun-to-cost ratio of any sport or hobby that I've ever tried is disc golf (frisbee golf). Most courses are FREE and the equipment might cost all of $30-$40 to start off with. Plus you can drink while you play.

Photography is a fantastic hobby, but you won't get a decent camera for under $200.00, never mind $100.00 ...

Lots of good suggestions here ... Bird watching ... running ... snow shoeing in the winter ... tennis ... hiking ... fishing ... fly fishing ... racquetball ... reading ...
