The fine art of planking, where people are photographed face down with stiffened arms and legs, has already swept out of Australia and taken the world by storm. Formally called “the laying down game,” it has encouraged people to produce surprising and surreal images that have entertained millions.
HAH ran into a group of Plankers in San Francisco a few weeks back in front of the National Academy of Sciences. LOL as they tried to ignore me while a was walking amongst them with my 6'3" 285lbs frame and Motorcycle boots. LOL

And you didn't take the opportunity to get planked with them?
You'd have gone viral.
Every generation's got something like this that mystifies their elders -- telephone-booth stuffing and VW Bug stuffing were IT when I was a youngster:

Most of the time, the funny part about it is the setting the person chooses. I think it is funny when someone is planking on their office fax machine or on a guardrail on the side of a road.
It looks stupid when someone is just lying in the grass or in a cooler. It isn't planking when your entire body is supported. You're supposed to have a minimal amount of contact and the rest of your body is rigid and hanging in mid air. I don't do it myself, but some of the pictures make me laugh due to their creativity.
We used to have our own games like this and we called it "stupid drunk stuff". I think it's funny.
