hiking and look for meteorites and these guys
sell them to Universities for some good cash or

It certainly can't do you any harm. But make sure you are very well versed on the trespassing laws in the state you intended to walk around. Florida and Texas, they can shoot to kill, and ask questions later, and it is very unlikely that any landowner will grant permission to a stranger to go on their land.

Also check your laws on metal detector usage. If your on Public land. Tennessee's laws suck un their use.. thats why I have not bothered with getting one.

We have a few areas here in CA where they are common in the desert. I see a lot of people who sell them at the gun shows, they do not seem to sell many.
Only certain types are being purchased by the Universities. Be sure to document and photograph before picking them up. If you see a shooting star and manage to find it record the time and date as this will help if you sell. A large magnet can be just as valuable as a metal detector.
Where you find one you will likely find a boatload. People will keep the GPS points to themselves for return visits.

Interesting post from tejano - thanks!

We got a metal detector a few years ago and then learned about all the restrictions. Also be sure to close your dig holes - it's basically cleaning up after your trip.

Learn and have fun with it!

Would you have a hint as to where to begin to look? Your post reminded me of something else. How is it that the world can launch all these satellites into space with no regard for the fact that it may fall out of space and hit someone on earth? More and more of these things are falling out of the sky. And more and more of these things still get launched into space. What the heck?!

Well, the first place I would look is in open desert areas...again, keep an eye on trespassing laws. As for space junk, a lot of stuff gets burned up entering our atmosphere and what doesn't get burned up is probably going to hit water.
