Is smoking over-rated?
Often watch smokers totally devoted to smoking - they will go outside in any weather, prioritise smoking over lots of things, they will make themselves smelly, dirty, keep smoking even smoke when they have the flu or cold.
As some who has smoked before - Isn't it all a bit over rated - I mean yeah once in a while its can be nice with a beer, but all the time, everyday - Is it really that much fun
Its really quite boring all that smoking, not to mention disgusting and bad for you.

It's an addiction. The hard-core coffee drinkers are nearly as bad.

Smokers are a dying breed literally and figuratively. Here in IL you can't smoke in any public buildings including bars and restaurants. The current law says you much be at least 15 ft from the entry door and there is talk of extending that law to the entire property. Some businesses have already prohibited smoking anywhere on their property including myself. Is it over rated? In my mind yes it is but then again I have been disgusted by it by entire life.
As far as the health side of things. Well... I lost my mother at the age of 57 to lung cancer from smoking so I know first hand the damage it can do to a person and their family.
Yes it's a disgusting habit and people look like fools standing outside sucking on them but the real damage is what is happening to families. I can tell you than you will burn through an average health insurance policy coverage in about 2 months of radiation and Chemo then you have to apply for state assistance and they won't give it to you until you and your immediate family is broke....

I quit a 55-year cigarette habit. Upward of two packs a day. I can assure you that people who are standing huddled together in the cold or squinting from the burning rays of the sun just to have a quick smoke are not doing it because it's "nice" or "fun". It's neither. They need the nicotine and the cigarette is the delivery system. Unfortunately, the cigarette has about a gazillion other additives that are the real culprit when it comes to health.
We all started smoking because we thought it was cool, or our buddies were smoking, or we thought it made us look older (and it eventually does!) or sophistocated. By the time we realized it didn't do any of those things, we were hooked.
I don't think people should smoke. But it's legal, and the tobacco lobby will make sure it stays that way. Making it illegal would be pointless. Anyone old enough to remember the Volstead Act? You can see how that worked out.
While I don't condone smoking, I do encourage a little more understanding for the folks who are addicted.

I quit after a pack a day for 25 years, which isn't as spectacular as theater gypsy's accomplishment, but still something. I've never been addicted to anything other than nicotine. It was very difficult to stick to my guns for the first few months, but I'm glad I did! Heroin and nicotine are the two most addictive substances according to some, and I can believe it (although I've never tried heroin and have no intention of doing so!).

I'll give up my coffee cup when you pry it from my cold, dead, hands.

I smoked from 1962 until New Year's Eve of 2004. At the height of my addiction I was smoking 60 cigarettes per day. It took me six tries, and about 70 lbs. of additional weight, to finally rid myself of the nicotine addiction. Long story short, it was one helluva battle...
There are some who claim that kicking nicotine is tougher than kicking heroin. Since nicotine is still socially acceptable (more or less, and less with each passing year), I tend to agree.
It also took me two years to wean myself from coffee. Caffeine, and particularly the caffeine in coffee, is a major problem in United States society. It dang near wrecked my adrenals, my health and my life. Now I drink one mug of Irish Breakfast tea in the morning, and have a sip of coffee every two weeks or so (when I go shopping at Trader Joe's).
There is an emerging demon too -- the so-called "energy drinks" like Red Bull, Monster, etc.
