I joined due to constant badgering from family. I think it is a poor substitute for telephone or face to face conversations. Also I don't see any point in someone telling me: went to the gym, supermarket, or whatever, pictures of your vacation, where you are going on vacation, playing stupid games, etc. Not sure what the future is going to be for our young people, but with all the abbreviations they use in texting they are sure to lose the ability to spell or put a complete sentence together, with email and sites like facebook, they will lose their ability to communicate face to face and eventually become socially inept.

Well, have you read this? Job Seekers' Facebook Passwords Asked For During U.S. Interviews I am thinking of getting rid of my account. There was discussion of this in the Employment thread the other day. This could be used for purposes of discrimination in so many ways.

What I wonder is, do you actually have phone or face to face conversations with all these people? Most of the people I know who aren't on facebook tend to be wrapped up in their own little worlds and not interacting much with people who aren't thrown by circumstance into their little worlds. Which is fine if that's what you prefer. I have many cousins all over the country who I only see in person at funerals every year or two or three or ten, but with facebook I can learn what they're doing and comment and feel connected throughout the year. I find that facebook gives me more to talk about with people when I see or call or email them because I know things that they might not have otherwise mentioned -- such as where they're going on vacation, which I find interesting. (I agree that the games are VERY annoying, but you can block those from showing up on your page. Otherwise I think Farmville would have driven me off almost as soon as I got started .).

This made me laugh so hard, people in my office are looking at me sideways.
Haha Thanks for that!
I have been a registered Facebook member for years now, and had Myspace before that. I guess I grew up with it, and it's a great way to keep in touch with family, friends, friends of friends (ie, potential new friends!) and businesses.
My favorite thing about it is updates from my favorite local stores and coffeehouses showing off their new merchandise, or offering up "facebook friends" deals- specials like buy one get one free coffees and the like.
It's useful.
That being said, my preferences are set to private, my last name isn't my REAL last name (it's my mother's maiden name!) and I have an email address linked to facebook that I use for nothing else besides facebook.

Social media is the wave of the future. Some experts think it will eventually kill email. Businesses will set up their own social networks and so forth. I freelance and deal with clients all the time through email. My younger clients in the 20ish range, write me emails in text form. It can be very frustrating.

I use to have a facebook account, but the pressure to "like" a post is just dumb to me. Why "like" a post? Why can't I just respond if I want. I also have issues with privacy and everyone possibly seeing replies to other friends. I'd rather just call or e mail. And now that employers are now demanding passwords to FB accounts only makes me not want one even more just out of protest. It just seems like a fad that everyone voraciously took on. I just wonder how long until Facebook becomes the next MySpace. Oh, and one look at failbook.failblog.org make me want to avoid such a community.
