LOL... Sometimes when an off-key note is played, that can also make it sound like the guitar is out of tune. I know when I was a teenager, I drove my guitar instructor nuts everytime I played a note that was out of key, the expression I saw on his face was like when somebody scratched one of those old blackboards with their fingernails!

Yeah, well this was definately no off-key note.
Trust me, I can tell when a guitar is flat or sharp...or both. And I would think anyone who knows music could too. Just one string being the slightest bit off can ruin a whole song. Or make a bad first-impression!
Believe it or not, Im an intense listener of a lot of things involved with music, analyze a lot. Sometimes the person realizes it, if he's paying attention, and if he doesnt, then it needs to be made known.

I do trust your musical talent Power Surge, and there's nothing more annoying than hearing a guitar that's out of tune, especialy after putting on new strings! I've seen it plenty of times on my guitars, I put on new strings, play the guitar for a couple of minutes, play a chord and yikes! You know how nasty that sound is!

Eddie Van Halen revealed a secret in the early 1980's for reducing the chance of new strings going out of tune. Boil them before putting them on. So I guess you can say the strings on my guitars are hard boiled, not scrambled!

To LionKing: Well, it's a good thing I can sing, because I haven't had much practice on the guitar. I'm a true novice - a "beginners beginner". I did play keyboard for a while years ago, though, and let me tell you. That keyboard link you sent... That keyboard is NICE. Also, Korg is "top of the line". Looks like that will be a pretty good buy, because Korg can get really expensive.

To brentington: I'm all ears! Please do refer me to those spanish classical guitar CD's you speak of (and / or any other guitar CD's you think are excellent). And errr - yes, I'll keep practicing - I sure have a lot to do, though! You see, I pretty much have a linear mind, so I have the bad habit of trying to do too many things at once. In addition to singing, and trying to brush up on my keyboarding skills, I bought a steel string guitar (an "esteban" guitar), and I'm taking art classes (I paint, but I wanted to catch up on my drawing skills). I know I need to slow down, but when I get bored doing the same thing day after day, it helps to switch up sometimes. The singing comes easy (not a pat on the back), because it's just my "thing", and I've always been fascinated with the keyboards, but lately I've really been haunted by the acoustic guitar. I think my problem is that I fall in love with the sound and then burn to reproduce, or create my own sound.

Okay - I forget who made the comment about the Native American flute, but in response: YES it is haunting. I had a Native American CD I had picked up out of curiosity a few years ago, and there was this flute song on it that I still remember to the point that I can whistle the whole song - now of course it doesn't sound like the flute when I whistle (ha!).

It's the same with singing. When I would sing with other people, if someone was even slightly off - key it would ruin the whole stint. I guess I'm anal about that, too. Definitely a "nail on the chalkboard experience! Grrrr!

Default Jimmy Page is my uncle

I cant back that up, but it got your attention. Zeppelin fan in Sacramento, I've been playing guitar on & off since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I've been through Strats, Les Pauls & recently bought an ESP. My 11 year old son started playing and thinks he's the rock god of 6th grade.

Any other Zeppelin fanatics out there?

yeah,Page is a influence for me,he's a riff monster.Phew, just got done playing for 4 hours straight,I'm trying to learn sooo many covers and also go over ones I know to keep brushed up.Started on working on 25 or 6 to 4 tonight, the song is in A,then G,F#,F and E,easy...but....I want to learn the solo note for note because t's so great,so THAT will take some time, though it's mainly penetonic stuff.

Before I rarely learned cover solos note for note, just did my own to them, but now that I am it's expanding my mind, and some songs the solos are so signature it's best not to deviate too much from them.

Speaking of Page, when I get into the next band I wouldn't mind doing Blackdog and Stairway to Heaven.Everybody scoffs at Stairway because it's overplayed, but it's such a great song and actually I don't see it played out too often.Fool in the Rain would be another cool Zep cover to do.

Most covers are actually pretty easy for the most part,at least the popular songs. Was working on Monkeywrench by the Foo's and Gel by Collective Soul tonight also, not to hard of songs but they are fun and people like 'em.Some songs don't even have solos.

Everybody has their personal taste in guitars,I just never played any other brand other than Fender(American made) or Gibson that I liked except Heritage, which is basically Gibson anyway.PRS,Ibanez,Charvel-Jackson,ESP all nice guitars but I just like the Fender and Gibson's.Actually there is a ESP Lespaul style I like.

I was listening to Hootie &the Blowfish in the car today, that guitar player has great tone on that song Let her Cry,nice tasteful solo too.

Anybody here play Mandolin?

Nice thread, I'm a Hammond B3 organist and fortunate enough to find you folks. Primarily gigging blues, R&B, based in Ft. Lauderdale FL. Ocassional good gigs opening for national acts. Currently looking to move to Alamogordo NM area where I hope to set up a base of operations. I don't believe it's a very jumping spot but hoping maybe to meet up with other writers and musicians. Anybody out there in that area? Colorblind, you're not thinking about Antonio Carlos Jobim are you? While not necessarily intricate his music sure is quite beautiful.
