Anyone do it? I would love to try it on Lake Erie.

i live in the burbs west of chicago saw a surf documentary that touched on great lakes surfing. ive had an interest in it for a while but its a bit expensive since the best surfing is in colder months and you need heavy duty wetsuits.
the thing thats kept me from doing it also is its really spotty when good waves are and i'm a good 45 in from the lake so id have to find out about good waves and then have the freetime to go otu where as if you lived down the street you could take a stroll to the beach see good waves and run home to get your board.
I dont know my lakes well i guess lol but is erie off ohio? i think that was one of the places i saw featured in this doc

My brother and I were asked to record an album of Motown tunes done in surf-guitar style. We were to record 10 covers and to write two original tunes that had that same Motown/surf sound.
The two tunes we wrote are titled "Motor City Pipeline" and "Surfin' Lake St. Clair".

Interestingly, I see some people doing this in Lake Michigan on the beaches north of downtown Milwaukee.
They are dedicated, though; I don't see them much until September. They're out on the lake until December.

A few years ago, I was just browzing my local library looking for some books to read. I was getting tired of reading the same old, same old, so I was looking for some books that had some unique subject matter that I thought would be interesting to read about. As I was browsing, I happened to stumble upon a book written by a guy who had been surfing one of the great lakes his whole life. The guy was in his 50's and there were guys doing this well before his time also. Anyways, I was amazed that people actually surfed the Great Lakes. Before finding that book, I had never even heard of anyone surfing the Great Lakes and didn't even know it was possible. It was a very interesting book, to say the least. And these guys were troopers. They'd go out on these lakes in the dead of winter to surf, because that was the best time. I give these guys all the credit in the world. They are awesome. But I'll stick with the Florida's or California's of the world, thank you, lol.

Oh, wow.
Yeah, I've seen quite a few people out on Lake Michigan. I think it's a fall thing because that's when the winds pick up enough to do it and before the lake front areas freeze over.
You might look up videos for ice surfing. They keep on going even after the freeze in some places.

Mid October through November is the best time. The lake is still warm from the summer and the cold fronts begin to come through. With this hot summer, the conditions are perfect for some really big waves.

I recall reading an online article on this....there is a good spot near the southern tip of Lake Michigan, off Gary/Hammond. Apparently the currents and winds are just right for some good waves. The surfers there somehow have access to the data stream from a lake buoy that transmits lake conditions (winds, waves, etc) and they use it to pick the opportune time for the best waves.
The joke was instead of a background track of palm trees and Beach Boys the backround track would be blast furnance & oil refinery flares and Ministry.
