I collect stuff, but models and books and fanfiction. I have a second generation phaser, and can't find a tricorder now, but the ones I had were swiped by someone during a move. I also have my uniform pin.
My biggest activity is fan fiction. I write mostly DS9 related stuff, largely alternate universe themes where they lost the war with the Dominion. This way I get to combine trek with my passion for history and especially the what ifs there.
Trek fandom has its trekkies, who are mostly media only types, but a larger, deeper base of Trekers who encompass the larger science fiction world as well, and include many people who have made real space travel possible. And your cell phone? The guy who built the first commercial one lived on the beach and went for runs and missed a lot of calls. He decided to make a phone you could take with you. Of course he made it look like a communicator.
Think about it, today we all have them. Treks idea of having a communicator with you where ever you go has come true, and even the idea of getting informantion sitting in the middle of a forest with smart phones and tablets and the ipads (can't help but think that was 'borrowed' from trek, although they spelled it padds) has become possible. We are becoming Star Trek.
