I have an ink pad I got at a thrift shop. It's a RubberStampede Neon Ink Pad with pink, yellow, orange, and green ink.

Problem is, the case is not marked, and I can't tell if the ink is dye or pigment. The ink is moist enough I can revive it, but don't want to risk ruining it by using the wrong refreshing "stuff". It must be ancient because I couldn't find any reference to it on Google.

Is there any simple way to determine whether I have dye or pigment ink?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Jann

You might want to watch this video, I know yours is on a stamp pad so I would stamp it on a piece of paper and then wet it if the ink runs then chances are it is a dye if it stays in place then it is pigment

Also is there any chance you can take a photo of it so it can be seen I might be able to tell by looking at it

If the pad has a "hard" surface and looks like a woven cloth type material is over the top, then it is a dye ink pad.

If the pad is a foam softer surface with no cloth type covering, then it is a pigment pad.

Most multi-colored pads were dye, but Tsukineko did make some Brilliance pigment pads.

If you really just aren't sure, Ranger makes a product called Perfect Ink Refresher that you can spray on dye or pigment pads that refreshes the ink without adding more/inaccurate colors to the pad.

Hope this helps!

Flyboy, thank you.
The problem is, the ink is so dry, you can't stamp with it. But I'll take a look at the video.

Also, no luck getting a picture, I'm a dud with a camera.

Rothbear, I have some of the Ranger ink refresher, but thought I read it didn't work with pigment ink.
I may give it a try anyhow--the pad is useless as is, so I can hardly ruin it any worse!

Thanks, all, for the helpful suggestions.
